What a Way to Start 2009!

Greetings once again from sunny Singapore! It is 2009 and I would have never, eeeeeee...........eee.........eever imagine the way I started this new year.

First, I would like to say I had a awesome time in Indonesia. A time to catch up with old friends. A time to meet new people. A time to impact more lives. A time to experience new things. A time for more reflection too. It was great!

What was I going to talk about? Oh... The way I started off this year.

My flight was supposed to arrive in S'pore at 11pm on 31st Dec. Initially, I thought that it was not too bad. I might be able to reach home before midnight and do the countdown with my family.

So I boarded the plane on time, with loads of excitement for the coming new year. I quickly found my seat and settled down. I don't know what happened to me but after sitting on my seat for less than 5 minutes, I knocked out. I went into "lala land". Maybe I was too tired.

I was expecting to see the lights of Singapore when I wake up but I didn't. I saw the exact same lights before I slept 1 hour and 15 mins ago. I was quite surprised. And of course, I didn't wake up on my own accord. I was in beautiful "lala land" remember? I wouldn't want to leave that place so soon. Haha...

I was awaken by a SMS by Ken. He has touched down in S'pore already. That was about 10:50pm. He asked me to meet him at Terminal 2 to help sort out some logistics. Now, the background to this whole situation is this: Ken and I took different flights back to S'pore. According to our flight schedule, it was only 10 minutes difference. My flight was scheduled to land at 11pm. We are supposed to meet each other at Changi Airport to split the work of bringing the logistics back.

Under normal circumstances, it is not too bad to wait 10-15mins for someone else at the airport. But it was New Year's Eve!!! So when I received the SMS from Ken, I was suprised that I was still at Medan's Airport. My plane didn't move an inch! So Ken has arrived in S'pore and I'm still in Medan. Ken has to wait 1 and a half hour for me at the airport on New Year's Eve! I felt sorry for him. But I could not do anything. Or at least that was what I thought.

With Ken waiting alone at the aipport in mind, I thought about taking over the cockpit to fly the plane faster. Maybe to speed it up a little. However, on second thoughts, it dawned on me that the only flying experience I had was on Microsoft's Flight Simulator (a PC game)! So I guess I'll be better off minding my own business in my seat. In the end, I ended up doing business in the cramped toilet for 30 mins! (Hey, it is not easy to do business in there when the plane is moving ok?)

The time was fast approaching 12 midnight and we were about to land in S'pore. Then with 20 seconds to the new year, a female voice came through the speakers: "Ladies and gentlemen, we have a request from a passenger to do the countdown on the plane together." Everybody cheered! "10!.... 9!..... 8!..... 7!..... 6!...... 5!...... 4!...... 3!....... 2!....... 1!!!!" The whole plane erupted with cheers and greetings! Happy New Year!!! Haha... It was the first time I saw a plane so lively. It was also the first time I spent the first few moments of a new year on a plane! Still can't believe that I did the countdown on a plane!

What a way to start 2009!

So of course, the first familiar face that I saw in 2009 was Ken. Haha... So happy to see him again in 2 different countries in a span of less than a day. He was the last familiar face I saw in 2008 and the first familiar face I saw in 2009. He must be really tired after one long day of travelling and after waiting for me for more than an hour! He was telling me how interesting it was to spend the first few moments of the new year in the airport. Haha... We sorted out our stuff and wished each other Happy New Year and left the airport.

For me, it was a new way to start the new year. It was interesting to say the least. What about you? How did you start your new year? Countdown Party? Hang out with friends? With family? Going crazy at some palce? On a plane (like me)? I hope you have enjoyed yourself.

With the new year already here, have you asked yourself what are the things that you want to accomplish this year? You can begin now and set out to do those things. By the way, don't bother to make New Year's Resolutions. Because according to research, New Year's Resolutions do not work. What works is a goal. A SMMART goal. (If you are not sure what a SMMART goal is, you can look it up in my book.)

I already have my goals written down. There a couple of things I would like to accomplish this year. What about you? Set your goals and make sure you take action and then your LIFE, WILL NEVER, EEEEEEEE................EEEEEEE..................EEVER, BE THE SAME, AGAIN!
